International Focus on Iran
NewsScope, February 26, 2007

Iran became the focus of international attention last week following the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) report that Iran had ignored a UN Security Council ultimatum to freeze its nuclear enrichment program, and was actually expanding it. In discussing the next step, the diplomatic challenges, Vice President Dick Cheney said "all options are on the table", inferring the possibility of military action.

As previewed here in the January 15, 2007 column, Iran's horoscope (April 1, 1979; 3:00 pm; Tehran) is primed for confrontation due to several threatening Mars-Pluto combinations. Iran's Mars in Pisces forms a supportive trine to Uranus in the fourth house, which can be seen as the Revolutionary Guard (Mars) working to expand its Islamic ideals beyond its Iranian borders (Uranus in fourth).

Uranus shows that this Iranian government is, at its core, radical and revolutionary. However, Uranus forms a square to diplomatic Pallas on the seventh house cusp of "others", which represents a faction that needs and thrives on cooperation with the rest of the world. At the moment, the transiting Saturn-Neptune opposition is right on Iran's Uranus-Pallas square, pitting its diplomatic elements against its more radical impulses.

With transiting Saturn near Iran's Leo Ascendant, the oil-rich nation feels justified in asserting its influence around the region. Transiting Neptune was exactly conjunct Iran's Pallas when last week's IAEA report was issued, and Iran has since proclaimed its willingness and eagerness to negotiate. This push-pull tension will likely increase over the next month when transiting Mars enters the Saturn-Neptune polarity, as independent authority (Saturn in Leo) vies with the consensus-builders (Neptune in Aquarius).
Solar Eclipse over Iran
NewsScope, January 22, 2007

Last week, in an interview with an Israeli newspaper, Jordan's King Hussein II revealed that he wants his country to develop a peaceful nuclear program. This stance is widely seen as political posturing since the West has been unable to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has begun a military build-up in the Persian Gulf to act as a warning against Iran's defiant government.

One of the basic techniques astrologers use to find global troublespots is by relocating a Solar Eclipse to a nation's capital. On March 19 we will have a particularly menacing Solar Eclipse because the New Moon closely squares Pluto. When locating the eclipse chart to Tehran, this astro-event takes place a few minutes before sunrise (at 6:13 am), and Pluto is exactly conjunct the Midheaven.

The U.S. may be directly involved since transiting Mars at 16º Aquarius is exactly opposite the U.S. Midheaven. The actual events around the date of this eclipse may seem like hostile engagement, or perhaps nothing particular at all. However, this Solar Eclipse sets up huge explosive potential, which may be released shortly afterwards when the eclipse point is triggered by a fast-moving planet.

For example, the Solar Eclipse of June 21, 2001 was activated on September 11, when transiting Mars opposed the eclipse degree. Watch, then, around May 11 when transiting Mars forms a conjunction with the location of the March 19 Eclipse. This date, plus or minus a few days, is celestially primed for violent or military conflict, and the kind of event that marks an historic turning point.
Bad Omens over Iran
NewsScope, January 15, 2007

Last week, Chuck Hagel, Republican Senator from Nebraska, called Bush's proposed Iraq plan "the worst foreign policy blunder since Vietnam", as Condoleezza Rice was grilled before the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee. One of the central criticisms of the Bush plan was the potential for the war to expand into Iran, which was in sharp contrast to the Iraq Study Group's recommendations to engage Iran diplomatically.

Iran's horoscope (April 1, 1979; 3:00 pm; Tehran) features Mars in deceptive Pisces, where it conjoins Mercury. Mars here, as the symbol for the nation's military, prefers to act discreetly or undercover, or through agents. Over the past year, transiting Pluto has been squaring this Mercury-Mars conjunction, as Iran gave military and financial support to Hezbollah and Shiite troops in Iraq, plus (presumably) secretly developed its nuclear technology.

Last week's Mars-Pluto conjunction formed a close square to Iran's Mercury, as the Bush team put Iran on notice. Many astrologers noted the sudden appearance of the bright Comet McNaught during Bush's speech, which seemed to herald some huge disaster. Iran's progressed Mars clarifies the picture, and underscores the bellicose vibe coming out of Tehran. At the moment, Iran's progressed Mars at 17º Aries is forming an exact trine to its Leo Ascendant.

More significantly, this progressed Mars will soon oppose natal Pluto, which can be seen as a direct confrontation with enemies, and a fight to the death. Progressed Mars opposite Pluto is intensely hostile, and ready to go to any extreme to defeat the enemy. In the shorter term, the Solar Eclipse on March 19 is right on Iran's Mercury-Mars, and is yet another ill omen for this region.
U.S. Relocated to Tehran
NewsScope, February 13, 2006

One way to track the U.S. relationship with Iran is to relocate the U.S. horoscope to Tehran. This technique uses the same time, date, and time zone (July 4, 1776; +5:00:40), but with the longitude and latitude of Tehran. The planets remain in the exact same degrees, while the relocated Ascendant becomes 22º25' Pisces, and the Midheaven is 25º36' Sagittarius.

Neptune (oil), located at 22º25 Virgo, dominates this chart by being the ruling planet, and by being located precisely on the Descendant. In Philadelphia, Mars (military) is in the 8th house, but relocated to Tehran, it's angular  conjunct the chart's fourth house cusp. The U.S. Mars-Neptune square becomes the primary signature of this relocation chart, making Tehran a key focus of the U.S. military-petroleum complex.

The CIA's first successful coup put the Shah in power on August 19, 1953 with all five of the outer planets forming tight aspects to this Mars-Neptune square. Iranian actions against U.S. interests are also shown in this chart. One example is the hostage crisis that began on November 4, 1979 when transiting Saturn was conjunct the relocated Neptune-Descendant, and transiting Neptune was entering the natal Mars-Neptune square.

Now and throughout 2006, transiting Pluto hovers over the relocated Midheaven, which accounts for the U.S.'s keen interest in Iran's nuclear program. Watch the rhetoric heat up when transiting Mars enters vocal Gemini on February 17. Mars then heads into an opposition with transiting Pluto, becoming exact on April 8. Mars-Pluto aspects can create extremely hostile confrontations, with increased likelihood of military action well before the aspect is exact.

notes - Iran has at least three national horoscopes in common use. A February 1, 1979 chart is often used, and is timed to Ayatollah Khomeini's return from exile. This April 1, 1979 chart seems to work best and is based on when Khomeini proclaimed Iran's current governmental structure in a radio broadcast.
additional technical notes - This April 1, 1979 horoscope supercedes the February 1, 1979 horoscope in its accuracy. The February 1 chart might refer to an important  Islamic revolution while the April 1 chart specifically describes the Islamic Republic of Iran.
